Today we finished our Volcano video (the parts we didn't get to during the week).
No Warm up.

What an exciting day!!! We watched and particpated in 3 demos showing how the 3 types of rocks are formed.
Warm up- "Name one difference between sedimentary and igneous rocks." We watched the following 3 demonstrations as well as made observations, drew sketches and answered questions. (Worksheet) They finished this as homework. 1. We shook of a jar full of rocks, sand, flour, rice, and leaves (sediments) to show weathering. Then we let it settle to see the different layers of sediments and to see how sedimentary rocks are formed. 2. We melted chocolate then cooled it (on a plate and in a container) to see how intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are formed. 3. We Layered 3 starbursts each, making a pretend sedimentary rock. We then smooshed our palms together as hard as we could, delivering heat and pressure, and making a metamorphic rock. Another windy day at EMS! Warm up: What is one reason sedimentary rocks are so important?
Today we identified 4 types of sedimentary rocks: shale, sandstone, limestone, and conglomerate by drawing sketches, reading discriptions. We also took notes and drew a picture of how sedimentary rocks are formed in our pamphlets. Whoa its windy today!!!!
Warm up: Do igneous rocks have large or small crystals? Explain your thinking. We silently read pages 37-40 and then took notes on sedimentary rocks in our pamplets Warm up: What is the difference between composition and texture?
We took notes in our pamphlets about igneous rocks. Then we looked, described, and drew the following 4 igneous rocks, granite, pumice, obsidean, & basalt. This was a worksheet Wow what a busy day! No warm up today. Today we...
1. filled out post cards addressed to ourselves 2. Went over chapter 2 worksheet 3. We watched 10 minutes of a very awesome National Geographic Volcano video. We will be watching little bits of it every day for the next week. "I'm feeling hot, hot, hot!" 4. We folded a sheet of paper in half in order to start of rock and rock cycle notes. Have a great weekend! Go Central! Yay! MEAP is over! Today we went to the computer lab onto a website called sciencespot kids zone. We learned at our own pace about igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the rock cycle, and states' geologic symbols. For a challenge we identified 6 states by their "rocky" nickname. We filled out a worksheet as we went along exploring each sight.
More MEAP! We spent the the little bit of time we had in Science reading pages 28-32 with a partner and filling out our guided reading worksheet #s 1-19.
Welcome back! It sounds like many of you had busy weekends! Mrs. Steele saw a bear over the weekend :)
Today's warmup "What is the rock cycle?" We turned in our homework, and finished Friday's journal entry. We also began reading page 28-32 with a partner and filling in section 1 worksheet. Wow! What a busy week! Mrs. Steele thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet so many parents this week. Guys and girls, you are so lucky to have such caring and supportive parents! If Mrs. Steele did not get to meet with your parents, encourage them to email/call her so that they can either talk or set up a time to meet.
Class today: 1. Warm up: "What is a rock?" 2. We were reminded to fill out our planners every day. 3. Finished our rock video and watched a quick clip of the Thrust SSC. 4. Read pages 25-27 and learned Finn MacCool and the Giant's Causeway and the value of rocks. - Journal Entry #4: Describe 2 ways rocks were used by early humans and describe 2 ways they are used today 5. Homework: Make a list of 10-15 ways rocks are used in your life. Be imaginative! Due Monday 10-18-10 |
